Friends of Karen provides vital and comprehensive support, at no cost, to families in the New York Tri-State region who are caring for a child battling cancer or another life-threatening illness.
We believe that families can maintain a sense of balance and stability even in the midst of a health crisis. This belief fuels our personal advocacy for families. Our team of experienced professionals -- social workers, child life specialists and expressive arts therapists -- ensures that each family receives the financial, emotional and practical support they so desperately need throughout their child’s illness, which can last many months or even years. Our one-of-a-kind sibling support program helps children better cope with the intense changes in their family life as a result of their brother’s or sister’s illness.
Friends of Karen serves a vulnerable population of ill children (birth to age 21) and their families. The majority of our children have cancer; 65% are age 11 or younger; 27% live in single parent households; 28% live in families whose primary language is Spanish; and 35% live in families with income below the poverty line.
Social workers from every major Tri-State area hospital that treats pediatric cancer patients (including Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; Montefiore Children’s Hospital; Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital; Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital; Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Hospital, to name a few) consistently refer their own patients for our support, citing the collegial/collaborative relationship they have with Friends of Karen social workers and our reliability, “knowing that families are receiving quality support.” We support over 650 families annually, with half living in the five boroughs of New York City.
Friends of Karen is widely recognized for its operational efficiency, with 83 cents of every dollar collected going directly to support our families. Charity Navigator, an independent organization that evaluates the financial health and responsibility of thousands of U.S. charities, for six years in a row has awarded Friends of Karen its highest 4-star rating. Founded in 1978, we have touched the lives of nearly 14,000 children. Friends of Karen maintains offices in Manhattan, Westchester County and on Long Island .
The Opal Forum was an exceptional gathering of top family office managers and the various professionals whose services support the family office world, all presented in a manner that created an excellent opportunity for the transfer of their considerable knowledge to the conference attendees.Mike Van Buren
