Public Funds Summit East 2016

Newport Marriott, Newport, RI
July 18, 2016 - July 20, 2016

-- --

Opal Group's annual public funds conference addresses issues that are critical to the investment success of senior public pension fund officers and trustees in the new millennium. Concerns of funding liabilities for beneficiaries in a world of declining returns yet maintaining a balance between the risk/reward paradigms is center in the mind of many trustees and representatives of pension plans around the country. The exchange of ideas both in and out of the session halls is key in educating and identifying viable alternatives that will address these concerns. We will discuss how surplus returns should affect employee benefit plans; closely examine the processes for selection and evaluation of investment managers.

Opal Group will kick off the event with its Annual Regatta Cup, in which attendees will have the opportunity to work with a professional sailing charter crew while competing against industry peers.

Attendees from the Family Office Forum and the Public Funds Summit are invited to our Summer Social Bash networking event (July 19, 2016 starting at 6:30 PM), which includes an open bar, great food, live music, and the presentation of the Global Impact Award to Ambassador R. James Woolsey.

Geopolitical Risk & Political Disruption: 2016 and Beyond

Growing global disorder – marked by military conflicts, regional crises, financial uncertainty and societal upheaval – have risen alongside macroeconomic concerns to create greater investment and corporate planning complexity, as investors need to gauge how, and to what degree, their portfolios could be impacted by the many serious geopolitical challenges throughout the world. Major developments in the political, security and economic domains throughout the Pacific Rim, in the Middle East, and along Russia’s borders with Europe, dominate the decision-making actions of American and world leaders, in both politics and in business. Chinese sovereignty disputes with Japan and numerous Southeast Asian countries, the Iranian-Saudi struggle for Islamic supremacy against the backdrop of global terrorist networks, escalating confrontation between Russian and European militaries, and the emergence of India on the global stage, comprise the major geopolitical considerations concerns of our day. Coupled with persistent apprehension over the weakening world economy, growing trade disputes and mounting cybersecurity threats, the agenda for the next American President will be momentous, in 2016 and for years to come. John Sitilides, consultant to the U.S. Department of State since 2006, former Board Chairman of the Woodrow Wilson Center Southeast Europe Project, and a 20-year veteran of international relations and global affairs, reviews these disruptive threats – ongoing and potential – from a strategic perspective, so that investors and corporate executives can more successfully mitigate against, and better manage, geopolitical risk. His lengthy experience in training senior U.S. diplomats and military officials, combined with advisory services to C-suite executives and his achievements in Washington’s think tank industry, uniquely position him to provide investors the geopolitical insights they need to more effectively consider portfolio risk protections. Sitilides will also assess the 2016 Presidential election campaign, with the possibility of unprecedented changes in U.S. domestic and foreign policies and their impacts on international economic growth, trade expansion policies, global commodity markets and potential flashpoints.
