Welcome Remarks

Keynote Presentation: What is at stake for the world in the US 2024 elections?

The US elections come at a time of intense geopolitical competition, an economic security agenda that
threatens globalisation, and two major wars with international consequences that are driving a wedge
between the West and the Global South. The likely Republican and Democratic front runners present
two radically different visions not only for democracy in the US, but also for US interests in the
multilateral order. How resilient are US democracy, and its foreign policy engagements and might they
be upended by voters in a few swing states, or is US power more durable than it appears.

Leslie Vinjamuri, Director of the US and Americas programme, Chair of the Faculty of the Queen Elizabeth II Academy for Leadership in International Affairs, Chatham House; Professor of International Relations, SOAS University of London; Vice Chair, Carnegie Council; Deputy Chair, Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission
