Family Office & Private Wealth Management Forum 2017

Gurney’s Newport Resort & Marina (formerly Hyatt Regency Newport), Newport, RI
July 24, 2017 - July 26, 2017

-- --

As Opal Group’s flagship event, The Family Office & Private Wealth Management Forum has become Opal’s largest family office event in the world. Known for its rich history and magnificent mansions, Newport, RI attracts thousands of delegates each year. The voyage begins with an annual Regatta Cup race, giving delegates an opportunity to find their inner competitor, and race across the harbor. In the course of three days, family offices, private investors, and investment managers navigate their way through the choppy waters of the past recession, while continuing to explore the best ways to map out their portfolios. With over 1000 delegates there is always an opportunity to meet potential clients. Discussions will cover a wide variety of investment topics including direct investing, impact investing, non-correlated assets, and many more. Come join us this July-- the forecast calls for fun, networking, and favorable prospects for preserving your family’s wealth.

Keynote Presentation: The Wealth Inheritor’s Dilemma

Who is the voice for the wealth inheritor – the adult children who inherit the family’s fortune? Most often, it is not wealth management professionals. They are typically focused on maintaining the fee-paying relationships with the wealth holder, and usually that comes at the expense of the inheritor’s happiness.

Family wealth expert and author Charles Lowenhaupt explains why too many adult children are miserable because of the stifling control exerted by their parents and their family’s money. Surprisingly, though, wealth holders have a way out, but they have to make a conscious decision. Do they want to be controlled by their family wealth, or not? Likewise, what is the right level of control — if any — for wealth holder parents? Each time wealth inheritors and wealth holders make an active choice, they both emerge happier no matter what the decision.

Charles discusses constructive ways how wealth inheritors and well-meaning parents can resolve control issues that cause too much family dysfunction.

Charles A. Lowenhaupt, Chairman, Lowenhaupt Global Advisors Family Office (SFO)

Cyber Fraud and Security: What Risks Does your family office face in today’s world?

With cyber security dominating the headlines, how must families and advisors prepare for the unanticipated and often unimaginable? Using “ripped from the headlines” stories, we will examine

  • The evolving nature of cyber threats – how stolen data is used (and resold), trends in new “scams” and why the old ones still work too well
  • What Security Protocols need to be in place to mitigate risk
  • How to prepare for all contingencies – inadvertent breaches, external attacks, terrorism and the increasing risk from “within” your trusted circle of advisors.
  • The Role Cyber security should play in an RFP process and how to identify the weak links
  • What to do when you are (inevitably) the victim of a data breach? (It will happen, just a question of when!)
  • How to develop disaster recovery plans, from basic data hacks to EMPs and hybrid warfare

Help for Children is a global foundation that provides grants to the most effective and efficient child abuse prevention and treatment interventions in six countries, making the world a safer place for children. The foundation is supported by the generosity of Hedge Funds Care and the broader alternative investment community. Help For Children has a two-fold approach: The foundation supports proven methods that are effective in preventing and treating child abuse while also acting as venture philanthropists by supporting promising practices that have shown a strong track record and providing seed money to launch larger public investments.
